Penn State always in a world of its own, always controlled the message, almost no media in town-Weiss, NYDN

11/8/11, "Joe Paterno needs to resign immediately; Penn State refuses to answer questions about sex-abuse scandal," Dick Weiss, NY Daily News

"Penn State has always operated in a vaccum, where the school has been able to control the message because there are no major media outlets in town, other than AP, but it comes off as just cowardly in its refusal to answer questions or explain its behavior.

This has become a runaway train and Paterno needs to resign immediately before the train runs over him in the form of the university’s board of trustees. His contract ends after this season and the board is said to be considering ending the vaunted coach’s long tenure, perhaps soon,
  • something they tried to do on two different occasions in 2004.

They would like nothing better than to push him out the door, believing he is physically incapable to doing the job and too stubborn for his own good. Of course, it would be out of character for Paterno to relinquish his power without a fight, even though he appears to have little moral high ground to stand on.

He has raised millions of dollars for the university, built buildings and established a vaunted college football program and

  • feels he has more power than any board of trustees and
  • probably Spanier, too, who should also be forced out.

In either case, it’s probably too little, too late in terms of the damage caused to the children, but now would be a good time

  • to finally do the right thing."
