At least 2234 in India infected with HIV via tainted blood from hospital transfusions in past 17 months. Activist says likely double or triple this number, most hospitals in India don't have facilities to test blood for HIV-BBC

May 31, 2016, "India hospital transfusions infect thousands with HIV," BBC

"At least 2,234 Indians have contracted HIV while receiving blood transfusions in hospitals in the past 17 months alone, say officials.

The information was revealed by the country's National Aids Control Organisation (Naco) in response to a petition filed by information activist Chetan Kothari.

Mr Khothari told the BBC that he was "shocked" by the revelation.
India has more than two million people living with HIV/Aids.

The highest number of patients who had been infected with HIV as a result of contaminated blood in hospitals, were from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh with 361 cases, Mr Kothari's RTI (Right to Information) query revealed.

The western states of Gujarat with 292 cases and Maharashtra with 276 cases rank second and third respectively.

The Indian capital Delhi is at number four with 264 cases.

"This is the official data, provided by the government-run Naco. I believe the real numbers would be double or triple that," Mr Kothari told the BBC.

Under law, it is mandatory for hospitals to screen donors and the donated blood for HIV, hepatitis B and C, malaria and other infections.

"But each such test costs 1,200 rupees ($18; £12) and most hospitals in India do not have the testing facilities. Even in a big city like Mumbai, only three private hospitals have HIV testing facilities. Even the largest government hospitals do not have the technology to screen blood for HIV," Mr Kothari said.

"This is a very serious matter and must be addressed urgently," he added."

May 31, 2016, "In India, Blood Transfusions Have Caused Thousands of HIV Infections," US News, Kimberly Leonard

"The data suggest screening procedures may not be adequate, though a government official says progress has been made."

"India is the second-most populous country in the world and has the third-highest number of HIV-infected people in the worldat around 2.1 million people – following South Africa and Nigeria." (end of article)

Poll dates, May 23-29, 2016, online poll of 12,969 who say they are registered to vote, error margin 1.2%. (Likely Voters not polled)

5/31/16, "Trump’s Latino Support Jumps to 32% in Latest NBC News/SurveyMonkey Tracking Poll," newamericamedia.org

"A tracking poll released Tuesday by NBC News and Survey Monkey shows Latino support for Donald Trump is now at 32%, compared to 61% Latino support for Hillary Clinton. A similar tracking poll from May 17 had Trump at 28% with Latino voters and Clinton at 65%.

Trump’s 32% Latino support from this tracking poll is now higher than the 27% Latino vote tally Mitt Romney got in 2012, when he lost to Barack Obama. Other polls, including those from Fox News Latino and FIU/Adsmovil, still have Trump doing poorly with Latino voters. The NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll did not include a Latino vote comparison between Trump and Bernie Sanders, although the tracking poll did show that Sanders is leading Trump by 12 points 52-40) among all voters surveyed, while Clinton holds a 2-point lead over Trump (47–45).

The NBC News/SurveyMonkey tracking poll is one of the few polls that is taking into account a large sample of online Latinos as part of its overall sample. This latest poll included 1,381 Latinos out of 14,797 total participants. The toplines for this tracking poll are available here."

"President George W. Bush today signed an Executive Order directing four federal agencies to develop regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions from new mobile sources. Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emitted by the combustion of fossil fuels, contribute to global climate change.
........
The President directed the U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency, EPA, the Department of

Transportation, the Department of Energy, and

the Department of Agriculture to work together

"to protect the environment with respect to

greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles,

nonroad vehicles, and nonroad engines, in a manner

consistent with sound science, analysis of benefits

and costs, public safety, and economic growth,

the Executive Order states.

The President's new policy is based on a decision

by the U.S. Supreme Court April 2 in

Massachusetts v. EPA that the Bush administration

failed to follow the requirements of the Clean

Air Act when it refused to regulate greenhouse

gas emissions from motor vehicles.
Announcing his new policy at the White House

today, President Bush said, "Last month, the

Supreme Court ruled that the EPA must take

action under the Clean Air Act regarding

greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles.

So today, I'm directing the EPA and the

Department of Transportation, Energy, and

Agriculture to take the first steps toward

regulations that would cut gasoline consumption

and greenhouse gas emissions from motor

vehicles, using my 20-in-10 plan as a starting

point."
The president announced his "20-in-10 plan"

in January (1/31/2006) during his State of the

Union address. It aims to cut America's gasoline

usage by 20 percent over the next 10 years....

The Grocery Manufacturers Association, GMA,

on fossil fuels but cautioned that a sharp

increase in the use of corn for ethanol could

hamper the ability of the food industry to

provide consumers, both in the U.S. and around

the world, with a reliable and affordable

supply of food.

Cal Dooley, GMA president and CEO, said,

is increasingly used for fuel. In fact,

the price of corn has nearly doubled in the

No hope for Antarctic ice melt for hundreds of years. Antarctic ice persists due to deep cold waters stored for centuries, Nature Geoscience study-Reuters

May 30, 2016, "Antarctic seas defy global warming thanks to chill from the deep," Reuters, Alister Doyle, Oslo

"A persistent chill in the ocean off Antarctica that defies the global warming blamed for melting Arctic ice at the other end of the planet is caused by cold waters welling up from the depths after hundreds of years, scientists said on Monday.

The Southern Ocean off Antarctica may be among the last places on Earth to feel the impact of man-made climate change, with a lag of centuries to affect waters emerging from up to 5,000 meters (16,000 ft) deep, the U.S. study said.

Many people who doubt mainstream scientific findings that human use of fossil fuels is warming the planet often point to the paradox of expanding winter sea ice off Antarctica in recent decades....

"Our findings are a step toward resolving the mystery," lead author Kyle Armour of the University of Washington, Seattle, told Reuters of the study in the journal Nature Geoscience.

He noted the upwelling of cold water helped to explain the persistence of sea ice but not its expansion, a trend other studies have linked to shifts in winds off the vast frozen continent.

Eventually, gale force winds in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica blow surface waters northwards and draw the chill, ancient waters from the depths.

That upwelling helps explain why the surface of the Southern Ocean have warmed by just 0.02 degree Celsius (0.036 Fahrenheit) per decade since 1950, a fraction of the global average of 0.08 degree (0.144F), the study said.

It was unclear if the cold waters could delay a melt of ice locked up on land in Antarctica, the biggest worry about the continent that could sharply raise global sea levels."...

Added: "Climate change not so global," Northern and Southern hemispheres are different, per 2014 peer reviewed study. Arctic and Antarctic can't be compared. No "global one-size-fits-all:”

This study reverses previous findings."

8/4/2014, "Climate change not so global," University of Queensland, Australia

"Scientists are calling for a better understanding of regional climates, after research into New Zealand's glaciers has revealed climate change in the Northern Hemisphere does not directly affect the climate in the Southern Hemisphere.

The University of Queensland study showed that future climate changes may impact differently in the two hemispheres, meaning a generalised global approach isn’t the solution to climate issues.

UQ School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management Head Professor Jamie Shulmeister said the study provided evidence for the late survival of significant glaciers in the mountains of New Zealand at the end of the last ice age – a time when other ice areas were retreating.

This study reverses previous findings which suggested that New Zealand's glaciers disappeared at the same time as ice in the Northern Hemisphere,” he said.

“We showed that when the Northern Hemisphere started to warm at the end of the last ice age, New Zealand glaciers were unaffected.

“These glaciers began to retreat several thousand years later, when changes in the Southern Ocean led to increased carbon dioxide emissions and warming.

This indicates that future climate change may impact differently in the two hemispheres and that changes in the Southern Ocean are likely to be critical for Australia and New Zealand.”

The study used exposure dating of moraines - mounds of rocks formed by glaciers - to reconstruct the rate of ice retreat in New Zealand’s Ashburton Valley after the last glacial maximum – the time when the ice sheets were at their largest.

The researchers found that the period from the last glacial maximum to the end of the ice age was longer in New Zealand than in the Northern Hemisphere.

They also found that the maximum glacier extent in New Zealand occurred several thousand years before the maximum in the Northern Hemisphere, demonstrating that growth of the northern ice sheets did not cause expansion of New Zealand glaciers.

New Zealand glaciers responded largely to local changes in the Southern Ocean, rather than changes in the Northern Hemisphere as was previously believed,” Professor Shulmeister said.

“This study highlights the need to understand regional climate rather than a global one-size-fits-all.”

The research was conducted in collaboration with the University of Griefswald, Germany, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, and the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science in July."

.
"Significance"...

"This record from a key site in the midlatitude Southern Hemisphere shows that the largest glacial advance did not coincide with the coldest temperatures during this phase. We also show that the regional post-LGM ice retreat was very gradual, contrary to the rapid ice collapse widely inferred. This demonstrates that glacial records from New Zealand are neither synchronous with nor simply lag or lead Northern Hemisphere ice sheet records, which has important implications for the reconstruction of past interhemispheric climate linkages and mechanisms.".

"Abstract"

"Recent debate on records of southern midlatitude glaciation has focused on reconstructing glacier dynamics during the last glacial termination, with different results supporting both in-phase and out-of-phase correlations with Northern Hemisphere glacial signals. A continuing major weakness in this debate is the lack of robust data, particularly from the early and maximum phase of southern midlatitude glaciation (∼30–20 ka), to verify the competing models....These findings preclude the previously inferred rapid climate-driven ice retreat in the Southern Alps after the onset of Termination 1. Our record documents an early last glacial maximum, an overall trend of diminishing ice volume in New Zealand between 28–20 ka, and gradual deglaciation until at least 15 ka."

98.8% of Dubai's water is supplied by its desalination plants-Bloomberg, Sept. 2013

Sept. 2013 article

9/23/2013, "Desalination Plants Supply 98.8% of Dubai’s Water, Forum Is Told," Bloomberg, Randall Hackley

"Desalination plants that make seawater potable supply 98.8 percent of Dubai’s water, with the remaining 1.2 percent coming from groundwater sources, the Arabian Water and Power Forum was told today.

Dubai is the commercial, banking and tourist hub of the United Arab Emirates, the second-biggest Arab world economy after Saudi Arabia. The arid, water-scarce U.A.E. contains about 6 percent of Earth’s proven oil reserves.

Producing desalinated water is so energy-consuming that future water and energy plans must aim for a more sustainable balance, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, chief executive officer of the state-owned utility Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, or DEWA, told the forum.

“We succeeded in reducing our unaccounted-for water in our water supply system to 10.88 percent in 2012 from 42 percent in 1988,” the CEO said, according to a statement. “The combined power generation and desalinated water production in Dubai is most-efficiently done using natural gas and liquefied natural gas as the primary fuel” in almost all cases supplemented by diesel oil as a secondary fuel, he said."

Water desalination enables economic expansion for UAE "to further drive our urban prosperity and economic advancement.”

April 9, 2013, "Dubai opens UAE's largest desalination plant," Waterworld.com, Tom Freyberg

"Dubai’s Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has opened its ‘M Station’ in Jebel Ali that has a generation capacity of 2,060 MW and can produce 140 million imperial gallons (MIG) of desalinated water per day.

Said to be the largest of its kind in the UAE, the US$2.7 billion facility was officially opened by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance, and President of DEWA.

The site includes eight multi-stage flash (MSF) units each producing 17.5 MIG per day. It also has six F-class gas turbines, each generating 234 MW and three steam turbines, generating 218 MW each.

DEWA CEO and MD, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, reportedly said that DEWA now has enough water and electricity reserves to last until 2020.

M Station was built in partnership with numerous project consultants and contractors, including Fisia, Siemens, Doosan and Alstom.

(UAE's) Al Tayer said: “We are now able to achieve a total production of 9,646 MW of electricity, and 470 million gallons of desalinated water per day, to meet the current and future needs of the Emirate of Dubai, including planned expansion to further drive our urban prosperity and economic advancement.”"

John Kerry tells US Senate in 1971 that US soldiers committed war crimes in Viet Nam. "Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Hearing on Viet Nam war." (Pres. Lyndon Johnson approved the first US bombing of North Viet Nam on August 4, 1964).

Spokesman for Viet Nam Veterans Against the War, John Kerry, addressed the April 1971 hearing. (Kerry served in Viet Nam 1968-69).

Kerry 5:20-6:56:

"Several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans, testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia. Not isolated incidents, but crimes committed on a day to day basis with a full awareness of officers at all levels of command. Its' impossible to describe to you exactly what did happen in Detroit. The emotions in the room, the feelings of the men who were reliving their experiences in Viet Nam. But they did, they relived the absolute horror of what this country in a sense made them do. They told the stories of times that they had

personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in the fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Viet Nam. In addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country. We called this investigation the Winter Soldier investigation."...6:56

.........

"John Forbes Kerry (born December 11, 1943) is an American politician who is the 68th and current United States Secretary of State. He served as a United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1985 to 2013, and was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Kerry was the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2004 Presidential Election but lost to incumbent George W. Bush.

The son of an Army Air Corps veteran, Kerry was born in Aurora, Colorado. He attended boarding school in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and went on to graduate from Yale University class of 1966, where he majored in political science and became a member of the influential Skull and Bones secret society. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1966, and during 1968--1969 served an abbreviated four-month tour of duty in South Vietnam as officer-in-charge (OIC) of a Swift Boat. For that service, he was awarded combat medals that include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Securing an early return to the United States, Kerry joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War in which he served as a nationally recognized spokesman and as an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War. He appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs where he deemed United States war policy in Vietnam to be the cause of "war crimes."

After receiving his J.D. from Boston College Law School, Kerry worked as an Assistant District Attorney and co-founded a private firm. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts under Michael Dukakis from 1983 to 1985, where he worked on an early forerunner to the national Clean Air Act. He won a tight Democratic primary in 1984 for the U.S. Senate and was sworn in the following January. On the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he led a series of hearings from 1987 to 1989 which were a precursor to the Iran--Contra affair.

In 2002, Kerry voted to authorize the President "to use force, if necessary, to disarm Saddam Hussein", but warned that the administration should exhaust its diplomatic avenues before launching war. Kerry based his 2004 presidential campaign on opposition to the Iraq War. He and his running mate Senator John Edwards lost the race, finishing 35 electoral votes behind the Republican ticket headed by President George W. Bush (just 19 short of the 270 required for election). Subsequently, he established the Keeping America's Promise PAC.

Kerry became chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2009, and in 2011 he was appointed to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. Having been nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and then confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 94--3 on January 29, 2013, Kerry assumed the office on February 1, 2013.

After returning to the United States, Kerry joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). Then numbering about 20,000,[60] VVAW was considered by some (including the administration of President Richard Nixon) to be an effective, if controversial, component of the antiwar movement.[61] According to Nixon Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird, "I didn't approve of what he did, but I understood the protesters quite well", and he declined two requests from the Navy to court martial Reserve Lieutenant Kerry over his antiwar activity.[62]

On April 22, 1971, Kerry became the first Vietnam veteran to testify before Congress about the war, when he appeared before a Senate committee hearing on proposals relating to ending the war. He was still a member of the United States Navy Reserve, holding the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Wearing green fatigues and service ribbons, he spoke for nearly two hours with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in what has been named the Fulbright Hearings, after the Chairman of the proceedings, Senator J. W. Fulbright. Kerry began with a prepared speech, in which he presented the conclusions of the Winter Soldier Investigation, and then went on to address larger policy issues."

"Donald Trump reiterated his pitch for improving the lot of veterans during a brief appearance Sunday before thousands of bikers at the Rolling Thunder rally in Washington, D.C.

The annual Memorial Day weekend rally draws tens of thousands of motorcyclists, many of them veterans, to pay homage to fallen heroes and raise awareness of veterans' issues. One issue has been interminable waits for medical service at VA hospitals.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee said that, if elected, he would ensure that veterans could opt for private physicians, "and we'll pay for it."

"Thousands of people are dying, waiting in line to see a doctor," Trump told the crowd. "That is not going to happen anymore."

Trump hit on several other familiar themes, including construction of a wall along the Mexican border.

"We are going to have a real wall," Trump told the enthusiastic crowd. "And who is going to pay for it?!"

"Mexico!" the crowd roared in response.

Trump also promised better international trade deals, an end to Obamacare and victory over the Islamic State, also known as ISIL or ISIS....

"We have to rebuild our military. It’s been decimated," Trump said. "We are going to beat ISIS. We are going to knock the hell out of them."

His latest comments came at the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally on Sunday, which was dedicated to remembering POWs and those missing in action....

"What I like about Trump is that he is one of us. He's not a politician," 52-year-old Louis Naymik was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency."...

Military veterans bikers group Rolling Thunder rides into Washington, DC, Memorial Day weekend. Trump will be there to celebrate with them-Bloomberg

May 26, 2016, "Trump to Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend at Huge Biker Rally," Bloomberg, Cirelli, Jacobs, Brody

Image caption: "Members of the US military veterans’ Rolling Thunder bikers group parade in Washington on May 26, 2013 as the country marked Memorial Day. Nicholas Kamm/AFP--Getty Images"

"Donald Trump is planning a Memorial Day weekend visit with one of his favorite constituencies: bikers.

As motorcyclists stream into the nation's capital for Rolling Thunder, their largest annual gathering, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is planning an appearance on Sunday, campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks said.

"I am doing it in honor of the great bikers who have been totally supportive of my campaign and now I want to be supportive of them," Trump said in a statement to Bloomberg Politics. "I look forward to it!"

The bike rally, called the "First Amendment Demonstration Run," begins at noon Eastern time on Sunday, starting at the North Pentagon parking lot and circling the National Mall.

At Trump rallies, motorcycle enthusiasts frequently line the entrances to show their support as protesters do the opposite just steps away. A central part of his appeal to them: a shared belief that self-interested politicians are degrading the military, ignoring veterans and running “a sad government,” as a letter about this weekend’s ride published in December by Rolling Thunder organizers said.

"We are fighting wars and seeking freedom for countries whose people hate us and want to destroy our way of live [sic]," the letter said. "Remember the history of WWII, the last war we fought to really win!"

The week before the New York primary, which Trump easily won, dozens of bikers organized a meet-up in upstate New York to support him. In January, he opened his remarks in Myrtle Beach by thanking a dozen or so motorcycle riders who stood outside cheering for him....

George Lombardi, co-founder of Citizens for Trump, posted a Facebook message that "tens of thousands of the Bikers for Trump" will be among the crowds gathering for Memorial Day events to remember the sacrifices of military members.

"In just about every speech he made from the beginning of his campaign, Mr. Donald Trump has always acknowledged the men and women that served or are serving in the US Armed Forces. [It] is no secret that Mr. Trump favors a strong military and that he personally supported many veteran charities," Lombardi wrote.

Motorcycles have played a prominent role in national politics in the past year.  In early June 2015, days before Trump announced his run, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst hosted a "Roast & Ride" that attracted presidential hopefuls to the state that holds the nation's first nominating contest. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a rider who had made early investments of time and money in the state, was considered the favorite in the GOP presidential race at the time."
